TELL Step 1 What do you believe is the purpose of a college education? I believe the purpose of a college education is to further your knowledge and experiences. I believe it helps you to become more independent, especially if you decided to live on campus. I believe living on campus gives you a better experience filled with more opportunities than if you are a commuter. Most activities are late at night and for a commuter that means staying all day on campus or traveling a couple times a day on and off campus. These clubs and activities give you experience in many areas. College also allows you to figure out what you want to do with your life. It then helps you become an expert in a field. So to me a college education helps you prepare for the real world giving you room to experiment and have fun while becoming an expert in a certain area. What does it mean to be educated? As we talked about in class, everyone has a different view on what it means to be educated. There are many ways one can be educated whether its book smart or street smart they are both ways you can be educated but in different ways. I believe everyone is educated in their own ways. You can become educated from college, high-school, internships, past experiences (whether it’s your own or from someone you know), workshops or seminars, past/present jobs, reading,… As I said before there are also different areas you can be educated in. You can be more knowledgeable in math, in cooking, in biology, etc. What experiences have you had with education that led you to this belief? Definitely my family and friends have led me to believe you can be educated in different ways. I believe your family plays a major role in your life and shapes who you are and who you want to be. Both of my parents went to college and my mom even has her masters. Even thought it was rare my one grandpa went to college. I believe my other grandparents are educated even though they did not attend college. I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without my family and friends. I believe it was their experiences are what made them educated. My friends also play a big role. I have friends who decided to go to a four year school, a two year school and even some who went right into the work force. I still consider them all to be educated. They are all still continuing their knowledge just in a different way.
